What is the fate of the reform of the electoral law? The meeting with the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine

On 13 September 2017, experts of the Group on reforming the electoral law of the Reanimation Package of Reforms (RPR) had a meeting with Andriy Parubiy, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, as part of the project on “Public Support for Reforming Parliamentary Electoral Law” carried out by UCIPR with the assistance of the Center for Democracy and Rule of Law and the European Commission. The RPR Group on reforming the electoral law consists of leading non-governmental organizations of Ukraine working in the field of democracy – Human Rights Platform, Internews Ukraine, Civic Network OPORA, Ukrainian Center for Independent Political Research, Election Law Institute, and others.

During a one-hour meeting in the Verkhovna Rada, they have discussed the current state and prospects for the reform of the electoral law, as well as opportunities for involving NGO experts in its promotion. The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine expressed his support for election-related reforms that would advance the openness of the electoral process, and stressed the need to join efforts of civil society organizations and lawmakers, so as to find a consensus on the implementation of this reform, which is of crucial importance for the country.
